Jess Roams Around HK During the Difficult State of the Country

Worldwide news about the happenings of the place and most of the airlines cancelled their flights to this place. It was on Aug 6, 2019 when they had a scheduled protest on our arrival date. We were really scared but we already booked everything from the accommodation, Klook activities, we had also exchanged our money, so everything were ready. Plus my dad was excited to go to this place and was very optimistic that time that everything were just exaggerated. We risked going there instead of not trying. I know it was still risky going to a place where there are conflicts between the citizens and the government, so we also made sure that our itinerary or the places we will be going on a specific date won’t be affected on their protest. We decided to stay at Macau for 4 days so we can also be sure that everything will be alright when we explore HK. I have made a separate documentation for our Macau Trip in here. We regularly checked their scheduled protest the days we were there so we would know where should we go to avoid encountering troubles. Most of their rallies were performed during weekend but we still checked their schedules in Google. Thank God for the gift of angels disguised as friends who kept sending updates.
To tell you frankly, protests at Hong Kong were not that chaotic as what I thought. Though maybe at some areas but protesters are very organized. They don't attack tourists or scare them. They just wanted to be heard but they do no harm. So our vacation there was still good. And it was quite an experience.

It was my second time at this beautiful place, but I wanted to spend it with my family this time. Excited to stroll and explore this place and of course, I’ll be their guide even though I am such a noob in terms of directions. Fret not because pocket Wifi to the rescue. Booked a pocket Wifi at Klook for 1,190 PHP good for 10 days.

PLACES WE VISITED

Disneyland
The happiest place on earth, that’s Disneyland. It’s every child’s dream to visit this famous theme park to meet their favorite Disney character. Not only the kids will enjoy this place but also the kids at heart. I promised myself the day that I went here for the 1st time with my friends to bring my family here. We also have to remind ourselves that our parents were once a child so its also their dream to be at this place. The place was so huge so its best to get a map and plan which of the rides that you have to ride first. I am glad that my dad and aunt were always on the go to try all the rides (yes, even the roller coaster ride!) with us considering that they are both senior citizens. The crowd’s favorite was the Iron man which you will be immersed on a 3D effect. Here are some of the rides that we tried, and I listed it in order of my preference.

  1. Iron Man Experience
  2. Mystic Manor Dark Ride
  3. Ant Man and the Wasp: Nano Battle
  4. Jungle Cruise
  5. Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars
  6. Space Mountain
  7. It's a Small World
You can’t miss to watch the Lion King show too. The castle area was under renovation when we went there last August 2019. There were no fireworks when we went there last time but you can’t miss the parade. It was still magical though.

Entrance Fee: ‭3,612‬ PHP via Klook

One Piece is all over Ocean Park!

Ocean Park
Marine creatures viewing is not the only attraction that Ocean Park offers, but also their adventurous rides. We didn’t ride much because we got dizzy during our Disneyland that we tried the day before we went here. The rides in the Ocean Park also were a bit adventurous and most of it were roller coaster rides. One Piece Attraction was also featured at this place so for Anime lovers out there, it will be a must visit.
Ocean park covers 91.5 hectares and is separated by a large mountain into 2 areas that is why there are cable cars and trains to transfer you at the other side of the park.
So can you imagine how huge this park is?

Choi Hung Estate
The famous blogger spot because of its instagrammable vibe of the place. The colorful court where no one plays basketball instead, the team took photographs. We arrived at this place by MTR through the green line, Kwun Tong Line and stopped by at the Choi Hung. It was far but we have enough time to explore the other side of Hongkong.
Looking for this place was a struggle since our google map pointed to a specific place, but didn’t saw it. At first, I thought it was inside a school so I went inside and the guard got mad at me and asked why I got inside. I hurriedly got away and stroll the place to look for the court. We were walking in circles on a very hot day and my dad and aunt got tired due to the long walks. We asked locals there if they can direct us to our desired location and directed us that we need to climb the stairs. You will know you are near if you can see a parking lot in the area.

Nan Lian Garden
Another spot to visit is the Nan Lian Garden which is just near the Choi Hung Estate. Situated at Diamond Hill which is one train stop away from Choi Hung Estate. You will know when you arrived at the place because of its majestic structure. The garden opens at 7 AM and closes at 9 PM. Explore the beauty of the place which is designed in a Tang Dynasty style.

FREE ADMISSION

Chi Lin Nunnery
This Buddhist temple is a joint project of Nan Lian Garden and is just situated at the other side of the Nan Lian Garden. There are large statues of Bodhisattva that are made of gold. Most of the corners of the place are prohibited for photographs to also pay respect to the worshipers. After exploring the place, you can buy some charms, souvenirs and vegetarian food which will also serve as a donation of the place. We bought some tofu with lotus and some mung bean rice for our lunch there. And it was so good!

10,000 Buddhas Monastery
We got lost and thought the beside place was the monastery. We didn’t know what we visited was a cemetery! We climbed at the top and realized that it was not the right place when I saw the golden statues at the top and realized it was on the other side. There was a small street that you need to pass so you can arrive at the 10,000 Buddhas Monastery. We were really exhausted and tired so me and my aunt just sat down at the nearby area while waiting for my brother and dad explore the place.

FREE ADMISSION
Opening Hours: 9 AM to 5 PM Everyday

This is a cemetery and beside this place, that's the 10,000 Buddha Monastery

Snoopy's World

From 10,000 Buddhas Monastery, we wanted to chill first at the mall since it was really a hot day and we were really tired climbing the top. Strolled from Choi Hung to Nan Lian Garden to Chi Lin Nunnery to the Buddha Monastery. The mall was just walking distance from the subway station.

Snoopy’s World is a small theme park located at the New Town Plaza Shopping Mall in Sha Tin. While exploring the place, we noticed that there were people preparing for the protest. Wearing some black shirts and masks while making some banners and writing something at their boards. We realized that we need to hurry back home. But still, we met the police on our way back.

Peak Tram
The tram that offers you a panoromaic view of the Harbour and skycrapers of Victoria Peak. The Madame Tussauds is also at this place but we didn't got inside since there's an entrance fee.

Upon return, we took a bus instead as it was way cheaper.

Peak Tram Fee:

  • Adult Single – 32 HKD
  • Adult Return – 45 HKD
  • Child (age 3 – 11)/Senior Return – 20 HKD
  • Child (age 3 – 11)/Senior Single - 12 HKD

Bus we rode going back

Avenue of the Stars
A place where the hand prints of the famous artists or stars in HongKong were. You can also spot the statue of Bruce Lee here. It is situated in Tsim Sha Tsui near the Harbour City.

Symphony of Lights
Just at the Avenue of the stars beside the Harbour City, people gathered to witness the symphony of lights which is scheduled daily at exactly 8PM. There was a countdown and buildings of the companies that participated started to light their buildings coincide with the music.

Kowloon Clock Tower
Located at the southern shore of Tsim Sha Tsui. The 44-metres tall old Clock Tower was erected in 1915 as part of the Kowloon–Canton Railway terminus.

Tsim Sha Tsui
I'm pretty sure you know this spot because most of our favorite bloggers have pictures at this background. It is just located near the Kowloon Clock Tower and subway station.

Shopping time at Mongkok
Mongkok is the famous destination if you are looking for cheap souvenirs or some fashionable OOTDs or cute stuffs. Make sure to haggle and only touch the items if you are sure you want to buy it. Do not haggle much or touch their goods if you are not sure as they will force you to buy and will get mad at you if you won’t get it.

Causeway Bay
Looking for branded and signature brands, then, Causeway Bay is your destination to go. Upon arriving at the Causeway bay station, large shopping malls greeted us with open arms. Window shopping time 😂

Sham Shui Po
You can’t also miss to visit the old street of Sham Shui Po. Like Mongkok, they also have cheap stuffs and mostly are electronic stuffs. We also dine at this place since it was way cheaper than at Tsim Sha Tsui.

FOOD

Who doesn’t love food at Hongkong? Many tourists visit HK just to eat Dimsum and I don’t blame them. The food is not just delicious but also pretty to look at.
I don’t have a lot to share about food since we didn’t have a food tripping at HK because it was way too expensive. Even their street food was expensive so we didn’t pushed our budget to try some delicious looking dimsums or their famous xiao long bao (not sure though if they have vegetarian). Nevertheless, here are some of the food verities we tried.

Street Food
Just near the I-Square Mall, CKE mall and the Chung king Mansions. This is where I tasted their egg waffle and my dad and brother on their fishball noodles. Their fishball noodles was the best according to my dad and brother so be sure to check it out. They also sell some pork intestines in a soup, some fried pork and some fresh juices.

Egg Waffle: 20 HKD
Fishball Noodle: 25 HKD

Cafe de Coral
Where we bought white rice most of the time 😂. Rice is life. This fast food restaurant is everywhere and it's like that typical Mcdonals or Jolibee here in the Philippines wherein everywhere you look, there will always be Cafe de Coral to brighten up your day. This is where we ate most of the time since this place was the only place that we know that sells affordable food. Mind you, the food were not cheap taste and it was fresh, healthy looking and lots of variety to choose from.

Price ranges from 28.5 to 55 HKD

Breakfast delight
You see that noodles? I think it's their famous soy sauce noodles at HK and it was a bit expensive for me.
Different menu on a different day

Just Beside the Street Food Market
We ate at this place after a very tiring day since the convenience stores were already closed at 8 PM. We got back to Tsim Sha Tsui after our Choi Hung Estate - Nan Lian Garden - Chi Lin Nunnery - 10,000 Buddha Monastery - New Town Plaza Shopping Mall. After we arrive at Tsim Sha Tsui, there were lots of police to block the protesters since it was weekend which we forgot. My aunt got lost for about 30 minutes because she got scared on the pile of police at the area and we were looking for her. Back at the hostel, at the street and the corner and finally got to meet her at the street food market. Tired, hungry and exhausted. Can you imagine how tired we were on that day?!

All carbs but we really don't mind. Just something to fill our tummy that night was really the best thing that happen.

Mongkok
After shopping at Mongkok, we need to fill our bellies now. It was our last night at HK and we wanted to splurge something satisfying and something new not just Cafe de Coral 😂
All vegetarian delights!

ACCOMMODATION

Lily Garden
Situated at Tsim Sha Tsui, we stayed at Mirador Mansions building where Lily Garden is situated. The location is very accessible and just near the subway station. The place was clean though it was small but most of the hostel at HK are tiny due to their insufficient land supply. There was a water dispenser which is really good since the water at HK are expensive.
Price at Agoda: PHP 4,513.08 per night good for 4 persons
